Ryan Polite wins Dave Campbell's Texas Football Player of the Year
Kent a Dodger and more ...
I'm still in doubt that we'll be able to sign Carlos Beltran and without Beltran and Kent, what enticement is there for Roger Clemens to stick around? To me, none.
The Houston Chronicle mentioned Moises Alou and Jeremy Burnitz as potential outfield options, but I like the sound of J.D. Drew better than the two of those.
Congratulations to the HBU Huskies' women's basketball team for their 78-65 win over Division I Alcorn State Thursday night at Sharp Gym. Shane Brown's Huskies are now 6-2 and are bouncing back from the loss of starting senior PG Jere` Adams and losses to No. 1 Union (Tennessee) and No. 3 Southern Nazarene. Freshman G Dominique Thomas led the way over the Lady Braves with 22 while freshman A.J. DeVries (who I really think has a ton of potential for HBU) and senior Stephanie Stoglin both scored 14 each. Arie Wilson had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. HBU has a two-game road trip Saturday and Monday nights in Odessa and Laredo, respectively, before playing again at home Thursday night against Southwestern Assemblies of God University.
Houston Westbury Christian dropped its first game in the Gonzaga Prep Classic Thursday night against Hyattsville DeMatha (Md.), 73-66. The Wildcats slipped to 10-2. They'll do battle against Germantown Academy from the Philadelphia area Friday night at American University's Bender Arena. Jeremy Barr led the way with 18. Sean Coleman, Wendell Preadom and Peter Stein added 15, 11 and 10 points, respectively. It is Westbury Christian's fourth appearance in the tournament.
As far as this weekend's Heisman Trophy goes, if we are talking about the best for an individual team, I think you'd have to give it to the USC quarterback. But I like Cedric Benson of UT before I do Adrian Peterson of Oklahoma.

Some Random Sports Thoughts
It's hard to imagine that one player will make or break the Houston Astros next season, but the inability to re-sign 2B Jeff Kent has to put doubts in the minds of Astros fans and season ticket-holders. CF Carlos Beltran and his super agent Scott Boras can't be encouraged by this nor does either of those two things bode well for RHP Roger Clemens to belt out another year (delaying his certain entrance to Baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York).
Best wishes to the Spring Westfield High School football team in the UIL Class 5A, Division I state championship game on Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio. (Tough to say coming from a Spring High alum, class of 1984.) Additionally, kudos to the Sam Houston State Bearkats in their NCAA Division 1-AA semifinal matchup on Saturday with Montana. Great story. Ron Randleman's a good guy who could have gone elsewhere over the years, but does a great job in Huntsville.

Welcome!
2004 has been a busy year and perhaps this blog will let me communicate with each and every one of you much better than I have in the past. As many of you know, I completed my first marathon on October 31 in Washington, D.C. doing the Marine Corps Marathon in 5:39:06 and I'm continuing my preparation for the hp Houston Marathon (which is set for January 16, 2005).
What's new? I was named by the Houston Striders running club the Male C0-Most Improved Runner of the Year with fellow Strider, Doug Spence, last night at its annual Holiday Party. Doug and I have both lost over 50 pounds in the last two years and have significantly improved our running during that time. Thanks Striders!
I'll be travelling this weekend to Dallas to watch the 6th annual Tom Hillary Dallas-Fort Worth All-Star Football game at Dallas Jesuit College Preparatory on Saturday at 1 p.m. I still haven't decided if I'm going to run the half marathon at the White Rock Marathon on Sunday. I finished the Houstonian Lite 30K (18.6 miles) on Sunday, December 5th in Sugar Land with a time of 3:30.
